Eligibility:

1. This competition is open to anyone studying or researching at a University
2. Photos must be of research or technology development related broadly to quantum physics
3. Entrants are permitted to enter up to three images
4. No nudity or portrayals of illegal or unethical activities. Submissions that, in the sole discretion of the judges, are considered inappropriate or unsuitable for publication will be deemed ineligible and removed from the competition
5. Images from entrants that do not conform to these criteria will be rejected

Prize:

6. Shortlisted entries will be included in a “Quantum Exhibition” which will be displayed after the competition is over
7. The winner will receive an additional large print of their photo to keep
8. The top 3 winners will receive Amazon vouchers

Ownership of Photography:

9. Entrants agree that their photo will be released under the following Creative Commons license:
   “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike” CC BY-NC-SA. This license lets others “remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms”

10. You represent and warrant to the competition organiser (NQIT) that you are the sole and exclusive owner of your submission, or that you have all right and authority to grant the rights in the submission to NQIT described herein; and you have obtained any and all releases necessary from all persons (or their legal guardians) depicted in the submissions. Images in public spaces do not require release from background people/subjects.
11. By entering this competition, if your entry is deemed eligible, you consent to the use of your name, biographical information, winning entry and any statements attributed to you, or photographs of you taken subsequently, being used for promotional purposes without additional compensation to you.
12. Entrants agree that shortlisted and winning photography may be used, under the above Creative Commons License, in future printed and digital materials relating to the NQIT project.

Technical Specifications:

13. Images must be in JPG digital format at a minimum of 300dpi and between a minimum file size of 5MB and a maximum file size of 25MB
14. Images can be downsized for submission but winners will be required to provide a high-resolution version of their entry
15. Images that do not conform to these Technical Specifications will be rejected
16. The image filename should include your name in it eg. “John_Smith_quantum_photo01.jpg”

Submission:

17. Entry to the competition is free

19. All entries should be accompanied by an entry form, available to download here.
20. The extended caption should be a maximum of 150 words and puts the research into context in plain English. The caption must be comprehensible to the lay reader and will be taken into consideration by the judges when making their decision
21. Entrants must declare if images have been manipulated (e.g, modified in Photoshop) and provide details of when and where the image was taken and the camera or equipment used to take the image
22. NQIT does not accept any liability for lost, damaged, delayed or incomplete entries

Dates:

23. The competition opens at 9:00 on Tuesday 22 August 2017
24. The closing date is 17:00 on Tuesday 26 September 2017
25. NQIT reserves the right to extend the duration of the competition if necessary

Judging Criteria and Process:

26. The total prize fund will be advised at the time of judging
27. A two-stage judging process will be followed:
    1. A Judging Panel of academic, industry and photography professionals, to be determined by NQIT
    2. Judging by members of the public at the Quantum Evening in Oxford on 17 October 2017
28. Entries will be shortlisted on their visual impact, public appeal and ability to convey research to a non-technical audience
29. Entries will be shortlisted alongside the extended caption putting the image into context
30. Judges will be appointed by NQIT and their decision is final
31. The judges are subject to change without notice at the sole discretion of NQIT
32. Winners will be announced on Tuesday 17 October 2017 and will be contacted directly by e-mail
